Study Abroad - Summer 2010

I went on a 3 week study abroad to New York City (I was already living there so it wasn't really "abroad" yet), Paris, and Milan. There was a group of 15 or so students on the trip and it was a comparative study of fashion between the three cities. My specialty was wedding gowns, so I spent 3 weeks looking and taking pictures of inspirational fashion - mostly focused on the bridal industry. It was so great to travel around in these cities and study fashion.

Our final project was a small collection based off our inspirations. We had to pitch our line to 2 professors in Milan so I decided I would start by finding a niche that needed to be filled - modest wedding dresses. I explained the market of Utah County (where I live) and how we need sleeves and shoulders on our gowns for religious purposes. There are hardly any dresses that are "fashion-forward" in the bridal industry that the girls who need sleeves and shoulders could wear without having to build on to the gown. It has always been a dream of mine to start a wedding dress line, especially a modest wedding dress line. My idea was received very well and it gave me the confidence to keep reaching for my dream and hopefully one day I will achieve it. I am so passionate about weddings in general, but especially the wedding dress. I would love to be able to create gowns that could be worn by all woman who for whatever reason prefer not to wear a strapless gown on their wedding day.

Here are some of the designs I submitted in my project.

FIT Final Project (the pink dress) - created Spring 2010

This garment was nothing like I originally planned. Over our month long winter break we had to sketch about 50 Valentino inspired gowns. I did a sketch, similar to the final dress, which was chosen. My teacher then set our color story - PINK. By no means was this dress designed in pink originally (it is actually my least favorite color) - it was originally shades of black and nude. I also did not plan on making it strapless, or fluted, or using chiffon for the skirt. We had to meet with our teacher and a guest judge who talked with us about our designs and basically by the end everything that I had originally planned went out the door. I hated this dress SO much by the end because it wasn't what I wanted at all. It was so much work and it took so much time so I was extremely happy when my sister tried it on and it actually looked AMAZING on her! What a relief. I think putting it away for 2 years and not looking at it helped - the hard work did pay off. Plus my sister is simply gorgeous!

FIT twist dress - created Winter Spring 2010

This was another project in my draping class. Our huge final was due a couple weeks before school was out so this was just a little assignment that was due the last week of class. We learned how to make a twist/knot neckline.

blue jacket - created Winter 2010

Final project for Pattern Making class at FIT. This jacket was cut and sewn on Sunday night, while I was trying to pack up my room, when I hadn't slept in a whole week (finals week), and I finished a couple hours before class started. It was a pretty stressful night. But it was all good, my parents were in town and I graduated the next day with my associates degree in fashion design.

FIT part 2 - second semester - Winter 2010

CLASSES

1. Flat Patten: (3 Hours) Flat Pattern is all done on paper using with math and technical skills.

pattern making final (more pictures to come)

2. Faces and Places in Fashion: (2 Hours) Lecture class. We learn about the people and things that are important in the fashion world. Each week we have guest speakers come and teach us about all the things we need to know to succeed in the fashion industry.

3. Digital Flats and Specs: (3 Hours) This class is a continuation of my photoshop/illustrator class from last semester. We only use Illustrator though, which is a program where we draw our designs into the computer instead of on paper. Basically it is all the very technical stuff to show all the seam lines, the measurements, the exact process of how the design will be executed.

4. Draping: (6 Hours) Draping is visual, it is the manipulation of fabric on a form to produce your wanted end result.

5. Fashion Data Management: (3 Hours) Product Data Management program.

Designs for my target market: Anthropologie/J.Crew type women

the scanner altered the colors a bit (shadow exceptionally dark)

6. Textiles: (3 Hours) Another lecture class where we learn about all and every type of fabric.

7. Fashion Art and Design: (4 Hours) Fashion drawing class where we sketch our designs.

We had to use watercolor as opposed to markers and pencils which is all I had ever used before.. so they didn't turn out super good... especially the faces.

8. Model Drawing: (2 Hours) This is a pretty chill class, we just draw models, mostly to get a feel for the fashion figure and for drawing different types of clothes in different mediums.

Final Draping Project - Fall 2009

My class had a set theme for our dresses, they were supposed to be structured and inspired by New York City architecture. (It's hard when there is a class theme... I designed this piece in mind with soft flowing fabric but then "structured" was added to the theme and I then had to go with a silk taffeta so it didn't turn out quite how I wanted it to). We then had to incorporate at least 2 things we learned during the semester (I chose princess seams and a cowl neck). We had to take pictures of buildings/architecture in the city for our inspiration. I went to the highline (my favorite place) and combined two pictures to form my inspiration.
