Classes at FIT first semester (accelerated associates degree one-year program) - 33 hours a week of class
3 hours - Flat pattern design: Creating and calculating measurements on
paper that can be transferred to fabric and then into a finished garment.
14 hours - Draping (2 classes: Soft and Structured Silhouettes): We create patterns by using muslin (fabric) that we pin onto dress forms where we then style and work
with the shape to make it fit correctly. So basically we never have a
PAPER pattern, our fabric that we shape is our only pattern. (My favorite classes!)
pencil skirt with darts |
gathered skirt + yoke + neck dart |
high-waisted pants with pleating |
(ugly) ruffle collar |
final structured silhouette coat project |
3 hours - Life Drawing: Mostly nude models with a few self-portrait assignments. (I had NEVER taken an art class before (minus what was required in Jr. High - and for your benefit I will not post any of my nude drawings).
8 hours - Fashion Art and Design (Fashion Figure
drawing): Learning how to draw models that we can then place
our designs on. We also learn how to draw clothing and render certain fabrics.
first fashion design project |
Celebrity Project - Taylor Swift
3 hours - Sewing: Actual sewing,
that way we can actually make the project that we design.
2 hours -
Computer (Fashion Photoshop): Basic CS4 photoshop and illustrator.
Those are just a few of the things I did at FIT my first semester.
